New Delhi: Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that under the new Education Policy (NEP), universities will not be able to recognize more than 300 colleges.
Human Resource Development Minister said, I recently went to a university and when I asked the Vice Chancellor how many colleges are accredited by that university, he said that 800 degree colleges. I thought I heard it wrong.
The minister said that when I asked again, he said, 800. It was a convocation. I was surprised. Can a Vice-Chancellor remember the principals of 800-degree colleges? The minister was addressing a digital session on the topic ‘Covid-19 Post-education’.
Nishank said, can he keep an eye on the quality and functioning of so many colleges. This is the reason why we are saying that we will work on this in a phased manner in the new education policy. A university cannot accredit more than 300 colleges. For that we have to increase the university and we will do that.
The Union Cabinet has approved the new education policy only last month. This system of granting recognition will be removed in a phased manner in the next 15 years and a phased system will be established to give gradual autonomy to colleges.
According to the concept, any college awarding a college degree in term will be an autonomous college or constituent college of the university.
