Geneva: An annual report by the United Nations Labor Ministry outlines the working conditions of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in China’s Xinjiang province. The report also hinted at drastic measures to deprive people of voluntary employment and called on China to provide more information on how it is respecting their human rights. This report has been presented by the International Labor Organization Committee.
Rights groups and Western governments have expressed concern over the treatment of Muslims in the region. A 20-member committee of independent international experts has given a separate report defending the Chinese government, saying that China is running vocational training centers in Xinjiang.
Beijing says these centers are intended to improve economic conditions and help reduce extremist violence in the region. The committee called on the Chinese government to provide more information about how its policies support “freely chosen employment” and prevent forced labor, as well as include courses in training centers for Uighurs.
