New Delhi: The Indian monsoon has unleashed its full fury this week, drenching cities and villages from Delhi-NCR to Bihar, Rajasthan, and the Himalayan states, leading to flooding, traffic chaos, and fears of more landslides. With the water level of major rivers rapidly rising, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded fresh red and orange alerts in at least eight states.

Delhi-NCR: Waterlogging and Relief from Heat

For the second straight day, Delhi and surrounding NCR cities Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad awoke to heavy downpours. Rainwater submerged key roads in Laxmi Nagar, Pitampura, Rohini, Anand Vihar, and several southern districts. While heavy vehicles waded through waterlogged underpasses, many Delhiites finally got relief from the oppressive humidity as temperatures dropped by 2–3°C.

The IMD predicts cloudy skies and light to moderate rain through the day, with brief spells of intense showers likely in the afternoon and evening.

Red Alert in Eastern Rajasthan, Orange for Madhya Pradesh and Bihar

The most severe IMD warnings are for eastern Rajasthan, where a red alert is in place due to the risk of extremely heavy rainfall and lightning today. Local authorities have begun moving people from flood-prone areas and are on standby for emergencies in districts such as Kota, Bharatpur, Sawai Madhopur, and Udaipur.

An orange alert is active in western Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar, signaling a strong possibility of very heavy rain, particularly in Bhopal, Jabalpur, Rewa in MP, and Patna, Nalanda, Khagaria, and Gaya in Bihar. Residents are being advised to remain indoors and avoid venturing near swollen rivers.

UP & Bihar: Surge in Rivers, Flood Watch

Uttar Pradesh has been lashed by strong thunderstorms, lightning, and torrential rain. Critical districts on high alert include Jhansi, Lalitpur, Agra, Mahoba, Hamirpur, and Jalaun, where several low-lying villages risk flash floods. In Bihar, capital Patna and nearby districts have sustained intermittent heavy rain, with flood warnings issued for areas along the Ganga and its tributaries.

Authorities across both states are monitoring embankments and have set up relief camps in vulnerable blocks.

Hills Hit Hard: Cloudburst in Himachal, Landslides in Uttarakhand

Mountainous regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand witnessed intense havoc. In Himachal’s Kullu and Mandi districts, a cloudburst late yesterday washed away several houses and blocked main highways. Photos from Uttarakhand’s Tehri–Garhwal area showed massive landslides, with debris cutting off remote villages. Rescue teams are working round the clock, as the IMD warns of more rain and the risk of fresh landslips in both states.

Rain to Soak Most of India: All-Region Alerts

The IMD has also announced yellow and orange alerts for heavy rain and thunderstorms in:

  • Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh
  • Gujarat, Maharashtra (including Mumbai, Pune)
  • Goa, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh
  • Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry
  • All Northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura

Rail and traffic disruptions continue in several metros, and the public has been urged to keep emergency kits handy and monitor local updates, especially in flood-prone urban and rural areas.

Monsoon 2025 has brought much-needed relief to parched regions but also raised the spectre of floods, landslides, and urban chaos. The situation remains dynamic, with more rain expected across most of the country into the weekend. Stay tuned for IMD advisories and cooperate with local officials for your safety.
