Chennai: Under the grip of a potent cyclonic circulation, southern Tamil Nadu experienced torrential downpours throughout Saturday and Sunday, particularly in the districts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari. The incessant rains wreaked havoc, disrupting daily life and triggering severe flooding, especially in Tirunelveli and Nagercoil.

Chaos and Commuter Woes: The deluge led to chaos in the transportation sector. As per a Times of India report, four southbound trains were forced to terminate due to the extreme weather conditions. To address the surge in refund requests caused by the cancellations, Madurai Railway Division swiftly deployed additional staff at the Kovilpatti counter. In a collaborative effort with Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), buses were arranged to ferry stranded passengers to their destinations.

Flood Fury and Government Action: The incessant rains led to a dire situation in the four affected districts. Flood-like scenarios unfolded, prompting the Tamil Nadu government to declare a public holiday in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari on Monday. Relief and rescue efforts were immediately stepped up to assist affected communities.

Weather Warning and Travel Disruptions: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Tenkasi districts, warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall with a possibility of extremely heavy downpours in isolated places. Given the dire weather forecast, numerous trains heading toward Tamil Nadu were canceled or partially suspended. Tracks in several areas submerged due to waterlogging and mudslides posed a significant risk of train accidents, further disrupting rail travel.
