New Delhi: In a groundbreaking move, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud announced that the Supreme Court will now share cause lists and case-related information with advocates through WhatsApp messages. This initiative aims to enhance transparency, improve access to justice, and streamline court processes using technology.

Here are the key details:

  1. Integration with WhatsApp: The Supreme Court’s new initiative integrates WhatsApp messaging services with its IT infrastructure. Advocates will receive automated messages regarding the filing and listing of cases.
  2. Article 39(B) of the Constitution: The legal question at the heart of this announcement revolves around whether private properties can be considered as ‘physical resources of the community’ under Article 39(B) of the Constitution. Article 39(B) is part of the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP), which guide the government’s policy decisions.
  3. Revolutionary Step: Solicitor General Tushar Mehta hailed this move as a revolutionary step. By sharing cause lists directly on mobile phones, the Supreme Court aims to make the justice delivery system more efficient and accessible.
  4. No Messages or Calls: The official WhatsApp number of the Supreme Court (87687676) will only transmit one-way communication. Advocates and litigants can receive updates but cannot send messages or make calls to this number.
  5. Paperless Approach: Justice Chandrachud emphasized that this initiative will significantly change working habits and contribute to saving paper. As part of the e-Courts Integrated Mission Mode Project, the Supreme Court has been actively digitizing judicial operations.
  6. Funding: The Central Government has allocated Rs 7,000 crore for the e-court project, reflecting its commitment to modernizing the judiciary.
