New Delhi: SC has issued detailed orders in the case against Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV, in a case of incitement to suicide registered by the Maharashtra Police. The apex court said that a prima facie assessment of the FIR filed by the Maharashtra Police does not establish charges against them. Earlier, on November 11, Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV, was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in a suicide case. Explaining the reason for granting bail to Arnab, the Supreme Court said that the FIR was not considered prima facie in the Mumbai High Court. Besides, the court did not pay attention to the nature of the charge and the level of the charge against Arnab.
Speaking on the matter, Justice Chandrachud Singh said that there was a special need to see whether the accused could run away or tamper with the evidence. He said that it was a matter of freedom of a citizen, and the Bombay High Court had failed in its duty to protect the freedom of a citizen. Because the person who has complained is being targeted by the Maharashtra government for expressing his views in a TV channel. At the same time, the Supreme Court said that all the courts have to ensure that no state harasses any citizen by using criminal laws.
He was reportedly arrested on November 4 in a 2018 case of allegedly inciting an interior designer to commit suicide. Goswami came out of jail at around 8.30 pm. He greeted the people gathered outside the jail by shaking hands from inside the vehicle.
