Malang: A strong tremor was felt in Java, the main island of Indonesia, but tsunami warnings have not been issued. Also, there is no immediate notice of any major damage or casualties in this earthquake. The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the quake was located at a depth of 82 km, 44.8 km south of the town of Sumberpukung in the Malang district of East Java Province. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 6.0 on the Richter scale.
Rahmat Triono, head of Indonesia’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said in a statement that the quake’s epicenter was located within the ocean, but the earthquake’s shock did not have the potential to generate a tsunami. He urged people to stay away from such slopes of soil or rocks where there is a risk of landslides. In some parts of the province, people felt moderate-level tremors for a few seconds. The disaster agency released photographs of the damaged roof of a hospital in the bleighter area of the neighboring city of Malang, while the roofs of some houses were reportedly damaged.
Indonesia is often affected by earthquake tremors, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. Last January, at least 105 people were killed and around 6,500 others were injured in a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Mamuzu and Majini districts in West Sulawesi province. At the same time, more than 92,000 people were displaced.
