New Delhi: In a significant move to enforce its community standards, social media giant X has announced a sweeping ban on accounts violating its policies in India. According to the company’s latest compliance report, a total of 184,241 accounts have been banned for engaging in activities such as promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity. The report covers the period from March 26 to April 25, 2024, reflecting the platform’s ongoing efforts to create a safer online environment.
Tackling Terrorism and Abuse
In addition to the accounts banned for sexual content violations, X has also taken decisive action against 1,303 accounts accused of promoting terrorism within the country. This brings the overall number of banned accounts to 185,544 during the reported period.
User Complaints and Grievance Redressal
The platform has also been responsive to user concerns, receiving 18,562 complaints from Indian users. These complaints were processed through X’s grievance redressal mechanism, in line with the new IT rules established in 2021. Out of these, 118 complaints pertained to account suspensions, with the company reinstating 4 accounts after a thorough review. However, the majority of the reported accounts will continue to face suspension.
Common Complaints and Potential Bans
The report further details the nature of complaints received, with the majority concerning ban evasion (7,555), followed by issues related to hateful conduct (3,353), sensitive adult content (3,335), and abuse/harassment (2,402). X’s stance serves as a reminder to its users to adhere to the platform’s guidelines or risk account suspension.
