New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has made a new plan for school education based on the New Education Policy (NEP). The new plan will start in 2024. According to the new plan, students will have more freedom and flexibility in their studies. Some of the changes are:
- Board exams will be held twice a year. Students can choose which exam they want to take and keep the best marks. This will reduce the stress and pressure of board exams. Board exams will also test the skills and understanding of students, not just the facts and information.
- Students of classes 11 and 12 will not have to choose between Arts, Science, Commerce, or other streams. They can pick any subject they like. They will have to study two languages, and one of them should be an Indian language.
- There will be no hard division between academic and vocational subjects, or between curricular and extra-curricular activities. Students can learn different things according to their interests and abilities.
- Textbooks will be simpler and cheaper. They will not cover everything in the syllabus, but only the important topics. Students can learn more from other sources if they want.
The new plan for school education is made by a committee led by former ISRO chief K. Kasturirangan. The committee has divided the school education into four levels based on the age groups of students. The first level is for students of 3 to 8 years old, the second level is for students of 8 to 11 years old, the third level is for students of 11 to 14 years old, and the fourth level is for students of 14 to 18 years old.
