Schengen Visa

Key Points

  • Digital Schengen visas with barcode will roll out across Europe by 2026 goodbye to passport stickers!
  • France successfully piloted digital visas during Paris Olympics 2024; full EU adoption by 2028.
  • Travellers can upload documents, pay fees, and receive visas online; in-person visit required only for first-timers or outdated biometrics.
  • Major new border controls: EES (biometrics-based entry/exit) from Oct 2025; ETIAS (online travel authorisation) for visa-free nationals from end-2026.
  • Talks continue on a simplified “pan-European” tourist visa, but implementation likely years away.
  • Indian and global travellers to benefit from quicker processing but must prep for digital procedures and tighter security.

New Delhi: Planning to visit Europe in 2026 or beyond? The way you get a Schengen visa and even enter the EU is set for a seismic shift. Soon, the familiar sticker in your passport will be replaced by a digital barcode, and nearly all paperwork will move online in what European authorities call the “biggest leap in travel convenience in decades.”

What’s New: The Digital Schengen Visa

After a successful pilot during the Paris 2024 Olympics, where 70,000 digital Schengen visas were issued as barcodes instead of physical stickers, the EU will expand the system to all member states.

By 2026:

  • Apply for your Schengen visa via a central EU portal
  • Upload supporting documents, pay fees, and track your application—all online
  • Receive your visa as a secure, digitally signed barcode on your device
  • Show the barcode at airports and entry points for scanning

Note:
In-person visits will still be required only for first-time applicants or those whose biometrics (fingerprints/photo) are outdated. For repeat or frequent travellers, renewals and applications will be much faster and more convenient.

Full digital rollout is expected throughout the EU by 2028.

New Border Controls: EES and ETIAS

Travel experience at Schengen borders will also go digital and biometric in the next 18 months:

  • EES (Entry/Exit System):
Launching in October 2025, this will replace old-fashioned passport stamping. Border officials will verify identity using facial recognition and fingerprints, speeding up lines and making overstays easier to track.
  • ETIAS:
Starting end-2026, travellers from visa-free countries (like the UAE, US, UK, Australia, and more) must apply online for a travel authorisation before flying. This system similar to the US ESTA will cost a small fee and is aimed at boosting EU security and efficiency.

Pan-European “Tourist Visa” Still on the Drawing Board

Alongside digitalisation, some EU countries (notably Greece, Italy, and France) are pushing for a flexible, Europe-wide “tourist visa.”
If approved, this visa could:

  • Cover both Schengen and non-Schengen EU nations
  • Allow smoother, multi-country trips for tourists
  • Simplify processes for specific events (e.g. Italy’s upcoming Jubilee visa for 2025 pilgrimage visitors)

However, this idea remains at the proposal stage. It will require full EU agreement and years of legal changes so don’t expect it before 2028 or beyond.

What It Means for Indian Travellers

  • Faster, more seamless visa process no more paper forms or sticker delays
  • Get ready for digital uploads, barcode scanning, and biometric checks
  • Reapply less often: easier renewals for frequent Europe visitors
  • Extra steps for first-timers or those with outdated biometrics
  • Stay informed: ETIAS rules won’t affect Indians (who need Schengen visas anyway), but new border checks will apply to everyone

From 2026, travelling to Europe for business, tourism, or family will be easier but also more tech-driven and secure than ever before. Stay tuned for updates and start prepping your digital documents!
