Mumbai: In a recent incident in Solapur, Maharashtra, cyber fraudsters have devised new methods to deceive unsuspecting victims. Posing as a Bombay High Court judge, an unidentified individual duped a district judge of Rs 50,000 using a clever ruse.
Here are the details:
- The Deceptive Message:
- The district judge received a WhatsApp message from an unknown phone number on Friday.
- The message featured a photograph of a high court judge as the display picture (DP).
- The sender claimed to be the high court judge and requested Rs 50,000, promising to return the amount by the end of the day.
- Without further verification, the district judge transferred the sum.
- Suspicion Arises:
- Shortly afterward, the district judge received another message demanding additional money.
- This raised suspicion, prompting the judge to take action.
- Investigation and Revelation:
- The district judge contacted the high court registrar’s office to verify the authenticity of the request.
- To their surprise, they discovered that the judge whose photo was used had never made such a request for money.
- Legal Action:
- The Mumbai Police promptly registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act based on a complaint filed by the high court registrar.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that cybercriminals continue to evolve their tactics, preying on unsuspecting individuals. Authorities urge everyone to exercise caution and verify any unusual requests before taking action.
