New Delhi: Indian weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sagar won the silver medal in the men’s 55 kg weight category. This is India’s first medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022. The gold medal of this match was won by Mohamed Anik of Malaysia. Sanket could lift only 248 kilograms. He suffered a minor injury in his third attempt at clean and jerk, due to which he missed out on the gold medal. Sanket lifted 113 kg in snatch and 135 kg in clean and jerk.
Mohamed Anik of Malaysia won the gold medal by lifting a total of 249 kg by creating a new sports record in clean and jerk. He lifted 107 kg in snatch and 142 kg in clean and jerk. Dilanka Isuru Kumara of Sri Lanka won the bronze medal by lifting 225 kg.
Sagar was on top in snatch but only one attempt was successful in clean and jerk in which he lifted 135 kg. After this, due to injury, he could not lift 139 kg in the second and third attempts. In the evening, P Gururaja (61kg), Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu (49kg), and S Bindiyarani Devi (55kg) will also be in the race for a medal.
Who is Sanket Mahadev Sargar
Sanket Mahadev Sagar, a resident of Sangli, Maharashtra, won the gold medal with a national record in the Commonwealth Championships held in December last year. He won gold in the snatch by lifting a weight of 113 kg. With this gold, he qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2022. 21-year-old Sanket Mahadev Sargar was the champion of Khelo India Youth Games 2020 and Khelo India University Games 2020.
Sanket Mahadev had to struggle a lot to reach here. Sangli’s father, a resident of Sangli, Maharashtra, has a shop selling pagodas and tea. His younger sister, 17-year-old Kajal, won the gold medal with 113 kg in the Khelo India Youth Games in June this year. Then while talking to the Indian Express, his father had said, we only sell tea pakodas every day and will do the same. Our daughter lifts a lot of weight and we are happy about it. Son is doing the same thing.
Sister came to the game because of brother
He told that I told all the customers about the feat of my daughter and everyone also congratulated me. Kajol got into weightlifting after elder brother Sanket, listening to sports commentary on the radio or on her phone while working at a tea stall with her father. Kajol said that my father always wanted us to practice a sport and when he came to know about the Weightlifting Academy, he registered my elder brother. Later I also joined it.
Sanket won the gold medal in 55 kg at the Khelo India University Games in 2020. Then he was only 19 years old. Earlier, he had also won gold in Senior National and Khelo India Youth Games. Then he said, the children of our area hardly play any other sport. When I was 13 years old, I got into weightlifting. I train for about 12 hours a day. After this hard work, I was selected for the National Camp. After winning the silver medal, he said that this medal of mine is dedicated to the Amrit festival of 75 years of independence.
India won the 126th medal in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games
India has been the best performer in weightlifting at 1990, 2002, and 2018 Commonwealth Games. India is the second most successful country in the history of the Commonwealth Games with 126 medals in weightlifting. Only Australia (159) has won more medals than that in the weightlifting event of these Games. India’s weightlifters dominated the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning nine medals including 5 gold.
