Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have arrested Shariful Islam, the prime suspect in the break-in at Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan’s residence. In a press conference held on Saturday, DCP Dixit Gedam of the Mumbai Crime Branch revealed shocking details about the case. Islam, originally from Bangladesh, had been living in Mumbai for the past five to six months using a fake identity.
A Plan Gone Wrong
According to police officials, the accused entered Saif Ali Khan’s home with the sole intention of theft. Unaware of the celebrity status of the homeowner, Islam believed he could discreetly steal valuables and leave unnoticed. However, his plan took an unexpected turn, resulting in his arrest.
DCP Gedam explained, “This appears to be the first such incident involving the accused. The investigation is ongoing to uncover more details about his activities and intentions.”
Living Under a False Identity
Shariful Islam had been residing in Mumbai under the alias “Vijay Das” and was employed at a housekeeping company. Investigators revealed that he lacked legal documents to justify his stay in India, raising concerns about how he managed to cross borders and establish himself in a metropolitan city like Mumbai.
Security Lapses Under Scrutiny
One of the most pressing questions raised during the press conference was how Islam managed to breach security in a VVIP area. Saif Ali Khan’s residence is located in a high-security locality, and the incident has put a spotlight on the effectiveness of security measures in such exclusive zones.
While authorities cited the ongoing investigation for their inability to answer certain queries, they assured the public that security protocols at the building and surrounding areas are being reviewed.
Previous Arrests in the Case
The arrest of Shariful Islam marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation. Earlier, police had detained three suspects—one from Mumbai, another from Madhya Pradesh, and the third from Chhattisgarh. However, their connection to the crime was minimal, with one being a delivery worker and the other a carpenter.
This latest arrest provides much-needed clarity, as police confirm that Islam is the primary individual responsible for the intrusion.
The case has raised serious questions about the vulnerabilities in high-profile residential security and the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in urban India. The investigation continues as police aim to uncover the full extent of Islam’s activities and his potential network in the country.
