The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, RSS, has made its first formal public intervention regarding the financial irregularities at the Shri Ram Lalla Temple in Ayodhya. Writing on the organization’s official media handle, RSS General Secretary, Sarkaryavah, Dattatreya Hosabale, stated that the magnificent temple constructed at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi represents centuries of devotion, sacrifice, and martyrdom by millions of devotees.

Hosabale expressed deep anger and pain over the theft from the temple’s donation boxes, noting that the unfortunate breach has profoundly wounded the sentiments and faith of the Hindu community worldwide. The RSS second-in-command asserted that the current atmosphere of confusion and uncertainty must end immediately, calling on the temple management and government authorities to handle the crisis as an extraordinary matter.

Extensive Embezzlement Uncovered by SIT

The unfolding scandal, which initially came to light in early June, escalated rapidly after a preliminary inquiry prompted the registration of a formal FIR on June 25, 2026. The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, immediately constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to audit the temple’s financial systems. On July 1, the state government granted a 15-day extension to the SIT, enabling investigators to expand the scope of the probe into all banking channels and accounting files from the past five years.

Law enforcement agencies have already arrested eight suspects linked to the operation. According to local police reports, investigators have recovered approximately Rs 80 lakh in cash, $1,000 in foreign currency, and a significant cache of gold and silver jewelry from the primary accused, Avinash Shukla, a contracted offering counter who has been remanded to intense police custody. The local development authority is also evaluating structural penalties against properties owned by the co-conspirators.

Accountability, Resignations, and Legal Repercussions

The fallout from the investigation has completely shaken the administrative leadership of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Following the initial wave of arrests and police raids, Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and Trustee Dr. Anil Mishra officially resigned from their roles, taking collective moral responsibility for the lapse in internal oversight.

Compounding the crisis, veteran BJP leader and Bajrang Dal founder Vinay Katiyar triggered a massive political storm by asserting that Champat Rai, administrator Gopal Rao, and Anil Mishra could face imminent prison sentences as the criminal investigation deepens. Katiyar revealed to reporters that he held a late-night consultation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the missing funds, confirming that the central leadership is monitoring the case closely. Concurrently, the Faizabad Bar Association led a march of legal advocates to demand a fresh FIR against the top trust administrators, calling for a comprehensive probe by central agencies if local protocols face delays.

Countering Conspiracies and Restoring Sanctity

In his comprehensive statement, Hosabale urged the remaining leadership of the Teerth Kshetra Trust to focus heavily on prudent financial systems, flawless operational transparency, and maintaining an atmosphere of religious purity. The RSS issued a special appeal to Hindu society, calling for maximum patience and restraint during this challenging period. The organization cautioned devotees to remain vigilant against anti-religious and anti-national forces attempting to exploit the administrative lapse to defame the faith, emphasizing that institutional transparency is the only viable path to keeping the trust of millions of Ram bhakts unbroken.
