London: The first live debate between Indian-origin Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss for the post of UK Prime Minister took place on Monday. According to Indian Times, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss had a live debate on BBC television on Monday night at 1.30 pm. During this, the tone of rivalry between them was clearly understood. Rishi Sunak repeatedly attacked Liz Truss’s economic policies in his first face-to-face TV debate.
Former Chancellor Sunak accused the foreign secretary of soliciting a short-term Chinese rush by cutting national insurance. Also accused him of taking wrong decisions on tax cuts, China’s policy, and inflation. Truss, on the other hand, accused his former cabinet colleague of raising taxes at their highest level for 70 years.
Sunak told Truss that his tax-cutting plan would kill lakhs of people in misery. The Conservatives will have to pay the price in the next election. Truss, on the other hand, claimed that Sunak’s planning would lead to a recession in the country. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak Johnson had a good relationship with each other when they were in the cabinet. They were blaming each other for the election at Victoria Hall in Stoke-on-Trent.
Rishi Sunak is widely seen as the winner of the Conservative Leadership vote. Members of the Conservative Party will vote from August 5. Sunak has termed his rival’s economic plans as wrong. Sunak said in the live debate- ‘We have to choose a good credit policy for our country, our children.’
Truss counterattacked on China
According to The Guardian, Sunak said, ‘China is the biggest long-term threat to the economic and national security of Britain and the world. They are stealing our technology. and are infiltrating our universities. Abroad, they are promoting Putin’s fascist invasion of Ukraine by buying their own oil and attempting to threaten their neighbors, including Taiwan.
Questions raised about Sunak’s shoes
Culture minister and Johnson loyalist Nadine Doris is backing Truss in the race for prime minister. He took to Twitter on Monday morning to tweet a Daily Mail report on Sunak’s £3,500 bespoke suit and Prada shoes. By tweeting this, he tried to show Sunak apart from the common people of Britain. Doris said – ‘Look at Sunak. At the same time, Liz Truss will travel the country wearing her airings of 4.50 pounds.
Liz Truss ahead in pre-poll polls
Pre-poll polls show Liz Truss taking the lead over Rishi Sunak. Despite this, people living in Britain are expressing their trust in Rishi Sunak. In the coming days, members of the Conservative Party will vote for their leader. The result will be announced on 5th September. The winning candidate will be made the new Prime Minister of Britain.
