Colombo: Last month, the inquiry committee investigating the death of 11 prisoners in Sri Lanka’s Mahara Jail said in their report that the prisoners had demonstrated fear of spreading the coronavirus infection which turned into a riot.
An official gave this information on Saturday. The interim report of the five-member inquiry committee said that the riots in Mahara Jail on November 29 and 30 were sparked by protests demanding early resolution on the issue of Covid-19. During this time 11 prisoners died. The government formed the inquiry committee after pressure from the opposition and relatives of the deceased.
