New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday said that in a 32-year-old case of road rage, Navjot Singh Sidhu, who came from cricket to politics, has been filed for the verdict of the sentence. The review petition will be heard on February 25. Justice A. M. Khanwilkar and Justice S. Of. Kaul fixed this date for the case at the request of Sidhu’s counsel.
Senior advocate P. Chidambaram, appearing for Sidhu, requested the bench to list the matter for hearing after February 23. To this, the bench said that it will hear the matter on February 25. Sidhu is currently the president of the Punjab unit of the Congress and voting for the assembly elections in the state is to be held on February 20.
On May 15, 2018, the Supreme Court had set aside the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to sentence Sidhu to three years’ imprisonment, holding him guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The top court, in its judgment, had found the Congress leader guilty of causing hurt to a senior citizen.
The court had found Sidhu guilty of “willfully causing hurt” to a 65-year-old man, but did not sentence him to jail and imposed a fine of only Rs 1,000. Under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for causing hurt intentionally), the guilty can be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with a fine of Rs 1,000, or with both.
