Washington: The Food and Drug Administration in the United States on Thursday approved the antiviral drug Remdesivir as the first drug to treat Covid-19. This medicine will be given to patients admitted to the hospital due to infection.
Gilliad Sciences Inc. of California is calling this medicine ‘Vecaluri’ and it has been found that with this medicine patients can recover in an average of 10 days instead of 15 days. These things have come to light in a large study of the National Institutes of Health in the United States. The use of this medicine has been approved on an emergency basis since the spring season.
It is the first drug to be fully approved by the FDA to treat Covid-19. The drug was given to President Donald Trump when he suffered from Covid-19 earlier this month. This medicine can be given to people who need to be hospitalized due to infection and who are at least 12 years old and weigh at least 40 kilograms.
The FDF will also allow its use on younger patients under the previous emergency rules. This drug blocks the enzyme that helps make copies of the corona virus. Patients will need some testing before using this medicine. This medicine is contraindicated in combination with the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as it may affect its effectiveness.
In a statement, Dr Meredith Parsey, Gilead’s chief medical officer, said: “We now have the information and the necessary things to fight Kovid-19. He said the drug has been approved in 50 countries for either temporary use.
Its value is currently in dispute as no study has found an ‘improvement in survival rate’. However a major study from the World Health Organization last week found that the drug does not help hospitalized Covid-19 patients.
