Aizawl: A tragic accident occurred in Mizoram’s Sairang on Wednesday morning when an under-construction railway bridge collapsed and killed at least 17 workers. Several others were injured and some are still missing, as the site had more than 35-40 people working at the time of the incident. The bridge, which was located about 21 km from Aizawl, fell apart around 10 am, trapping many workers under the debris.
PM Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each of the deceased’s families and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the PMMRF.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga also conveyed his condolences to the affected families and said that the rescue work was underway. He posted on X (officially Twitter) that ‘Very saddened and pained by this tragedy at Sairang near Aizawl where a railway over the bridge under construction collapsed today. At least 15 workers have lost their lives so far, rescue work is ongoing. My heartfelt sympathies to all the grieving families and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.’
The Chief Minister also thanked the people who volunteered to help in the rescue operations.
