
New Delhi: Parliament membership of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been canceled. Now Rahul is no longer a Lok Sabha member from Wayanad in Kerala. On Friday, the Lok Sabha Secretariat informed about this by issuing a letter regarding the membership of Rahul Gandhi (Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case). It may be known that in the case of defamation, the Surat court sentenced him to 2 years on Thursday. In 2019, Rahul Gandhi gave a statement regarding the Modi surname during a meeting in Karnataka. He had said, ‘Why is the surname of all thieves Modi?’. However, immediately after the sentence, he was granted bail on a bond of Rs 15,000. Let us inform you that in this case, a defamation case was going on against Rahul Gandhi for the last 4 years.
It may be known that during the campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, Rahul Gandhi had given a controversial statement in Karnataka. During an election rally, he had allegedly said, ‘Why all thieves have the surname Modi’. After this statement, there was a political storm in the whole country. Then BJP MLA Purnesh Modi filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi.

Why was Rahul Gandhi convicted?
In 2019, while being a Lok Sabha member from Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi came to Kolar in Karnataka for the election campaign. During this, while addressing an election rally, he had allegedly said, ‘Why all thieves have Modi as their surname?’. A lot of politics took place after this statement. Then BJP MLA and former Gurjar minister Purnesh Modi filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi. He alleged that Rahul Gandhi had insulted the entire Modi community with his statement.

During the hearing of this defamation case, Rahul Gandhi appeared before the court thrice. He appeared in court for the first time on 9 July 2020. During this, there was a delay in the hearing of the case, then Purnesh Modi approached the Gujarat High Court. After this, the High Court directed the lower court to expedite the hearing of the case. In October 2021, Rahul Gandhi again appeared before the court. During this, he declared some innocent.
Supreme Court gave an important decision
According to media reports, in one of its decisions in 2013, it was said that if any MP or MLA is found guilty in the lower court, then from that date their membership in Parliament or Legislative Assembly will be disqualified.
