Pune: The Zika virus is once again spreading in Pune, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 19. Among the infected is a senior citizen, prompting the Municipal Corporation’s health department to intensify preventive measures. Efforts include extensive fogging and fumigation to curb the mosquito population. Private hospitals are prioritizing the treatment of senior citizens, while pregnant women across the city are undergoing testing. Notably, 10 out of the 19 infected patients are pregnant women.
Zika Virus Cases Surge in Pune
This year, Maharashtra has reported a total of 21 Zika virus cases, with Pune accounting for 19 of them. The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which is also responsible for spreading dengue and chikungunya. Symptoms typically appear between 2 to 14 days after infection, but it’s reported that one in five infected individuals may not show any symptoms.

Hotspots in Pune
The highest number of cases in Pune has been reported from Erandwane, with six patients. Other affected areas include Mundhwa, Pashan, and Kharadi, each reporting three cases, while Dahanukar Colony has two cases. Ambegaon and Yerawada have each reported one case.
Symptoms of Zika Virus
Common symptoms of Zika virus infection include mild fever, joint pain, skin rashes, and red eyes. Some patients also experience headaches, stomach aches, eye pain, fatigue, and general discomfort. Given the potential severity of the virus, especially for pregnant women, the health department is urging residents to take preventive measures and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
