Prices rise due to lower supply
According to the information given by trade data, in Asia’s largest vegetable market, Azadpur mandi, tomato price on Saturday was 40 to 60 rupees per kg. Ashok Kaushik of Tomato Association in Azadpur Mandi said, “The arrival of new crops has reduced in the tomato growing areas, due to which the prices of tomatoes have increased.”

Tomatoes were sold for up to 2 rupees in lockdown
Due to the Kona Rona virus epidemic, tomatoes have been cultivated in small quantities this time in South India and Maharashtra. Due to which the prices are expected to rise. Experts said that in Kovid-19 lockdown, farmers had to sell from 1 to 2 rupees per kg. Apart from this, rain has also affected the crops. Due to all these reasons, the arrival of new crops has decreased in the national capital.

Consumption of Tomatoes over production
However, Kaushik has expressed hope that the situation will return to normal in the coming 15 days. He said that tomato production has decreased in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Jammu & Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh. In India, 19.73 million tomatoes are consumed annually. However, the total production is only 11.51 million tonnes. There is information about this in official figures.
