New Delhi: A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.2 rocked the African nation of Morocco late last night, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The quake, which was the strongest in the region in 120 years, according to the US State Geological Survey, toppled several buildings and triggered panic among the residents. The death toll from the disaster has risen to 151, as per Moroccan state television.
The quake’s epicenter was located near a village called Ighil in the Atlas Mountains, about 70 kilometers away from the city of Marrakesh. The quake struck at a depth of 18.5 kilometers below the surface. Social media platforms were flooded with videos of people running for safety and scenes of devastation caused by the quake. The Moroccan government has declared a state of emergency and mobilized rescue teams to help the affected people.
