Mumbai: Challenging the state government’s decision last month to allow the sale of liquor in supermarkets and walk-in stores in Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court ( A PIL has been filed in Bombay High Court. The petition, filed by social activist Sandeep Kusalkar, said the government’s decision would defeat the objective of discouraging the use of alcohol and give an opportunity to the individual to buy liquor himself without any supervision.
The petitioner, working for juveniles, youth, and orphans or children who are not getting parental protection, has submitted that such children are susceptible to social evils like alcohol or drug addiction and gambling. The petitioner says that the decision of the state government on January 27 last is against the resolution of the government made in August 2011, in which it had adopted drug de-addiction policy.

The objective of this policy is to check the increasing addiction of the youth and to keep people away from the habit of drinking alcohol. The petition said that this decision of January 2022 prohibits the sale of liquor only in shops near educational and religious institutions. The petitioner will probably request the court for a speedy hearing of the petition next week.
