New Delhi: NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr. VK Paul on Tuesday said that the National Expert Group on COVID-19 Vaccination has considered giving booster doses of the vaccine and it is being looked into very closely. Paul said this should be taken as a work in progress as science is still working in this area.
Responding to a question on the need to provide enhanced doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, Paul said in the press briefing that the National Expert Group on Covid-19 Vaccination had discussed the issue of injection of enhanced vaccines in their last meeting.
He said, “I would like to say that we are looking very carefully at the science for this kind of needs, along with the global work, you know there have been some studies done in the country and we are looking at it very deeply.”
“As you know, the WHO has called for a moratorium on incremental doses, so let’s see how that can be taken forward,” he said. He also emphasized that people should take a second dose of the vaccine for complete protection.
“People who have a pre-existing disease or are being treated for cancer should ensure that they get vaccinated,” Paul said. “Even if we get vaccinated, we need to take precautions,” said Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in the health ministry.
