Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said on Tuesday that he was not surprised about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ladakh and reminded that after the 1962 war, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the then-Defense Minister Yashwantrao Chavan had visited the border area.
Talking to reporters here, Pawar recalled that when he was the defense minister in 1993, he had gone to China and an agreement was signed, following which troops from both sides had retreated. He said, “Even during the all-party meeting with the Prime Minister, I had said about the current issue that it needs to be resolved through diplomatic negotiations and we should put international pressure on China.” On the question related to Modi’s visit to Ladakh, Pawar said that China had defeated India in 1962 but the then Prime Minister had gone there to boost the morale of the soldiers.
