Paris: The 33rd edition of the Summer Olympics kicked off spectacularly on Friday, transforming the French capital of Paris into a grand stage for a star-studded opening ceremony. Sports legends such as Zinedine Zidane, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams joined pop icons like Lady Gaga and Aya Nakamura in an unforgettable celebration. The event, which took place in front of a global audience, was inaugurated by International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Paris 2024 Chief Tony Estanguet.

For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony was held outside a traditional stadium setting. Instead, the French organizers orchestrated a breathtaking parade along the scenic Seine River. National contingents waved to enthusiastic fans from boats, creating a picturesque and innovative start to the Games.

The ceremony began at the Austerlitz Bridge and concluded near the Trocadero, with the iconic Eiffel Tower serving as a stunning backdrop. Embracing advanced technology, the French showcased a high-concept production featuring an enigmatic torchbearer who narrated the Olympic story, despite light showers in Paris that evening.

In a thrilling highlight, French football legend and World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane appeared in a pre-event video and later handed over the Olympic torch to Rafael Nadal. The tennis star, accompanied by Olympic greats Carl Lewis, Nadia Comaneci, and Serena Williams, ferried the flame across the Seine. The torch was ultimately used to light the cauldron attached to a hot-air balloon, symbolizing the Games’ spirit of innovation and tradition.

The ceremony was a vivid display of French culture, as the torchbearer mounted a mechanical horse to cross the water and lead the nation’s flagbearers to the podium. The event culminated with the Eiffel Tower in the background, providing a dramatic and iconic conclusion.

Representing India, table tennis champion Sharath Kamal and ace badminton player PV Sindhu proudly carried the national flag, leading a confident 117-member Indian contingent.

Adding to the historical significance, every medal awarded at Paris 2024 includes a piece of the city’s heritage, ensuring that each accolade carries a literal fragment of history.

This memorable opening ceremony set the stage for what promises to be an extraordinary edition of the Summer Olympics, blending tradition, innovation, and the timeless spirit of athletic excellence.
