London: The detention of fugitive diamond businessman Nirav Modi has been extended till August 27. Nirav, accused in the two-billion-dollar Punjab National Bank scam and money laundering case, was produced before a UK court through video conference. The 49-year-old diamond businessman has been lodged in Wandsworth Prison in southwest London since his arrest in March last year. She was presented in a video conference before District Judge Vanessa Beretser at the Westminster Magistrate’s Court in London. He was told that the hearing to be held before September 7 for five days would be a case management hearing. Judge Beretsar said, “You will appear again through video conference. Your lawyer can appear in court. “
The first phase of the hearing of Modi’s extradition case was heard by District Judge Samuel Gooji in May and the second phase is scheduled to be heard from September 7 to 11. The hearing to be held next month will complete the cross-examination of the prima facie case against Modi and the Indian authorities will request extradition for the second time, which was approved by Britain’s Home Minister Preeti Patel earlier this year.
