Patna: In response to the rising incidents of crimes against women in Bihar, the Bihar Police has introduced a groundbreaking initiative called “Safe Travel.” This proactive measure aims to enhance women’s safety while they travel alone on the state’s roads. Let’s delve into the details:

How Does the “Safe Travel” Initiative Work?

  • 24/7 Police Monitoring: Women traveling solo can now request police assistance by dialing the emergency number 112. The police will then closely monitor their journey, ensuring their safety from start to finish.
  • Digital and Physical Tracking: The monitoring system tracks female travelers both digitally (via live location sharing) and physically (through vehicle details). This comprehensive approach allows the police to respond promptly in case of any emergency.

Implementation Details

  • Pilot Project: The initiative kicks off as a pilot project in six districts: Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, and Nalanda. Starting from September 5, it will gradually expand to cover all 38 districts by September 15.
  • Third State to Adopt: Bihar becomes the third state to implement such a system, following Telangana and Haryana.

Festival Season and Safety

  • Festive Season Concerns: With the festival season approaching, women often travel to visit relatives, in-laws, and maternal homes. The “Safe Travel” initiative addresses their safety during this period.
  • Zero Tolerance Against Crime: Although not directly related to recent incidents, the initiative aligns with the state government’s policy of “zero tolerance against crime.”
