New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a significant political milestone on Friday, becoming India’s second longest-serving prime minister in a continuous term by surpassing the tenure of Indira Gandhi. As of July 25, 2025, Modi has served 4,078 uninterrupted days in office since he was first sworn in on May 26, 2014.
This historic achievement places him second only to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, who held the office for 16 years and 286 days. Indira Gandhi’s single longest continuous term lasted 4,077 days, from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.
A Career of Political Firsts
Beyond this latest milestone, Prime Minister Modi’s tenure is marked by several other records:
- He is the longest serving non Congress Prime Minister and the first to complete two full terms in office.
- Modi is the first Prime Minister to be born after India gained independence in 1947.
- He is the first and only non Congress leader to secure a single party majority in the Lok Sabha, a feat he accomplished in both the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
- Alongside Nehru, he is the only Prime Minister to have won three consecutive national elections as the leader of his party (2014, 2019, and 2024).
- Including his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012), Modi is the only Indian leader to have won six consecutive elections as the face of his party.
A Journey Spanning Over Two Decades
Modi’s time as an elected head of government now spans nearly 24 years, beginning with his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. His national political career was launched with a landslide victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to another decisive win in 2019.
In the 2024 general elections, while the BJP did not secure a majority on its own, the party emerged as the single largest party, allowing Modi to be sworn in for a historic third consecutive term as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition government.
