Mumbai: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced that it will unveil a statue of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar at its home ground Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, November 1. The statue is a tribute to Tendulkar, who is widely regarded as the God of Cricket and holds several world records in the sport.
Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket in 2013, played 200 Tests, 463 ODIs, and one T20I for India, scoring a total of 34,357 runs and 100 centuries. He is the only batsman to score a double century in an ODI and the first to reach 10,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs. He also holds the record for the most runs (2,278) and centuries (six) in World Cups.
The statue, which depicts Tendulkar hitting a six, has been made by Ahmednagar-based painter-sculptor Pramod Kamble. It is 14 feet high and stands on a globe that has a graphic combination of the world map and a cricket ball. A panel will also be set up near the statue, where Tendulkar’s career achievements will be outlined.
Tendulkar himself will be present at the unveiling ceremony, along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. The MCA has also invited former cricketers, officials, and fans to witness the event.
The Wankhede Stadium has a special significance for Tendulkar, as it is not only his home ground but also the venue where he played his last Test match in 2013. He scored an emotional 74 runs in his final innings and received a guard of honor from his teammates and opponents. The stadium also has a stand named after him, which was inaugurated in 2011.
