New Delhi: Maharashtra had the highest number of suicides in the country in 2021. Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh ranked second and third in the number of suicide cases. 1,64,033 such cases were registered across India. According to a recent report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), problems related to profession or career, feelings of isolation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, alcohol addiction, and financial loss are the main causes of suicide incidents in the country.
The report said that a total of 1,53,052 cases of suicide were registered in India in 2020, while a total of 1,64,033 cases were registered in 2021, seven percent more. It said the suicide rate increased by 6.2 percent. According to the NCRB report, Maharashtra recorded the highest number of suicides at 22,207 in the country last year.
After this, Tamil Nadu reported 18,925, Madhya Pradesh 14,965, West Bengal 13,500, and Karnataka 13,056, accounting for 13.5 percent, 11.5 percent, 9.1 percent, 8.2 percent, and eight percent of the total suicide cases, respectively. These five states accounted for 50.4 percent of the total suicide cases reported in the country.
The remaining 49.6 percent of cases were reported in 23 other states and eight union territories. Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state, reported a comparatively lesser number of suicides, accounting for only 3.6 percent of such incidents in the country.
At the same time, Delhi, the most populous of the Union Territories, recorded the highest number of 2,840 suicide cases in 2021. After this, 504 cases were registered in Puducherry. Last year, a total of 25,891 cases of suicide were registered in 53 major cities of the country. The national rate of suicide cases per one lakh population in the country in 2021 was 12. The highest rate of suicide (39.7) was recorded in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This was followed by Sikkim (39.2), Puducherry (31.8), Telangana (26.9), and Kerala 26.9.
