Washington: Jill Biden, the wife of US President Joe Biden, tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday, but has only mild symptoms. She was scheduled to travel to India for the G20 Summit, where world leaders will gather to discuss global issues.

The White House said that Jill Biden’s Covid-19 test was negative, but she will stay at her home in Delaware for now. President Biden will continue to be tested regularly and will be monitored for symptoms.

The US is facing a surge in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths due to the spread of new variants, such as Pirola or BA 2.86, which is considered more dangerous than previous ones. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Pirola as a ‘variant of interest’, meaning that it is under close surveillance.

Some schools, hospitals, and businesses in the US have reinstated mask mandates to curb the transmission of the virus. The CDC director warned that COVID-19 remains risky for unvaccinated people, especially those who are older or have health problems.
