Tehran: Protests erupted in western Iran at the September 17 funeral of Mahsa Amini, 22, who died after being detained by ethics police that enforced Iran’s strict hijab laws. Many women took off their hijabs in protest against the death of the girl in custody. In some videos, women were seen raising slogans of ‘Attachari ko death!’. While the security personnel used tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

Mahsa Amini was on her way from the western province of Kurdistan to the capital Tehran with her family when she was detained for allegedly breaking the dress code for women in Iran. Eyewitnesses have claimed that Amini was beaten up inside the police van. While in custody, she was first taken to the hospital, where she fell into a coma and died. A nationwide protest has started among women for this.

Some women in Iran cut their hair and set their hijabs on fire in a symbolic gesture of protest against the Iranian government’s tough law that mandates the hijab for women over the age of 7. Masih Alinejad, an Iranian journalist and activist, tweeted a video in which some women are cutting their braids and burning their hijabs. He wrote that ‘Iranian women are showing their anger by cutting their hair and burning the hijab in protest against the killing of Mahsa Amini by the Hijab Police.

Many Iranians took to the streets to protest the death of a 22-year-old Iranian woman being apprehended by the morality police. Some people even lodged their protests online. While the ethics police said that she was ill at the time of her detention. While videos of harsh punishment of morality police on women who remove their hijab are being shared on social media.
