Washington: US Congresswoman Grace Meng has introduced a bill in the US Congress to declare Diwali as a government holiday.

Ms. Menge, a Democrat, tweeted on Saturday, “Today I am proud to announce the introduction of the Diwali Day Act. My bill will make Diwali a government holiday. Thank you to all my government colleagues and the many advocates who joined me in expressing their support for this bill.”

He said that after the approval of the Parliament and the President, the Diwali Day Act will become law. If this happens, the holiday on Diwali will be the 12th government holiday in America.

Diwali is one of the most important days of the year for billions of people around the world and for countless families and communities in Queens, New York, and America, Ms. Meng said during a virtual news conference shortly after the bill was introduced in the House of Representatives.

The US Congressman said, “Diwali celebrations in Queens are such a wonderful time and how important this day is to so many people every year. America’s strength comes from its diverse experiences, cultures, and communities. The My Diwali Day Act is a step towards educating all Americans on the importance of this day and celebrating the country’s diversity and celebration. I look forward to seeing this bill pass through Congress.”

Ms. Meng has also pushed for a Diwali school holiday in her hometown of New York City. The bill was introduced in the House by 14 members, 13 of whom are Democrats and one Republican.

Organizations supporting the bill include the Indian Diaspora Council, Sikh Alliance, International Commission on Dalit Rights, Indo-Caribbean Alliance, National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates, Asian American Association (AAF), National The Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the Sikh Cultural Society, the Hindu Temple Society of North America, Hindus for Human Rights, and the Coalition of Hindus of North America and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.
