Washington: US President Joe Biden on Tuesday nominated two black women and the first Muslim judge to be appointed to federal judgeships. It includes 10 other candidates, including Indian-American Rupa Ranga Putagunta and Zahid Qureshi of Pakistani origin.

Zahid Qureshi, 45, would become the first Muslim in the United States to serve as a federal district judge if approved by the Senate. Qureshi is of Pakistani origin. He is currently serving as a magistrate judge in New Jersey.

Of the candidates nominated by the President, 10 are for the positions of Federal Circuit and District Court Judge, while one candidate is for the post of Judge of District of Columbia Superior Court.

The most prominent name among the judges nominated by President Biden is African-American judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. Jackson is currently a judge of the US Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia and is known for handling cases better. If the Senate stamps his name, then 50-year-old Jackson will replace Merrick Garland. Garland has recently been appointed Attorney General of Biden. If there is a vacancy in the Supreme Court, then Jackson is also a strong contender for the judge there.

The White House issued a statement saying that if approved by the US Senate, Judge Putagunta would be the first Asian-American woman to serve in the US district court for the DC district. Presently, Puttagunta is an Administrative Judge in the DC Rental Housing Commission.

The new President of the United States, Joe Biden, had already said that the whole of America would be represented in his administration. Women and blacks will also get preference in Biden’s team.
