Beijing: China has banned most activities in its largest city Shanghai in view of increasing cases of coronavirus infection. Shanghai’s financial center Pudong district and its surrounding areas will be closed from early Monday to Friday, according to the local government, as the city continues to conduct extensive COVID-19 investigations. In the second phase of the lockdown, there will be a five-day lockdown in the city from Friday.

Local people will have to stay at home. Offices and business establishments will remain closed and public transport services will also remain suspended. Already, many activities were banned within the city with a population of 2.6 crores. Shanghai Disney Park has also been closed.

China has reported more than 56,000 infections nationwide this month, most of which have been reported in the northeastern province of Jilin. On Saturday, 47 new cases were reported in Shanghai. China has adopted a strategy of ‘zero-tolerance against the global epidemic, due to which most economic activities are disrupted when cases increase. In China, 87 percent of the population has been vaccinated against Covid-19.
