San Diego: The US Navy’s aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, commanded by Capt Amy Bauernschmidt, departed San Diego this week for deployment and With this, Bornschmidt became the first woman in US Navy history to lead a nuclear carrier.

Bornschmidt, who previously served as executive officer on the USS Abraham Lincoln between 2016 and 2019, took over from Captain Walt Slater during a ceremony in August last year, news channel CBS 8 reported. The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln deployed from Naval Air Station North Island on Monday as part of the Carrier Strike Group.

According to a US Navy news release, Bornschmidt said, “When you find out that you have been given the job of looking after those who have been chosen to protect the nation, there is a more humble sense of responsibility and can not help it.”
