Colombo: The economic and political crisis continues in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the opposition has decided to bring a no-confidence motion against Rajapaksa in the Parliament session starting on Tuesday. Earlier, he has tried to thwart the opposition’s move by forming a new cabinet. Newswire reported that Rajapaksa has formed a new cabinet comprising 17 ministers. It is noteworthy that Sri Lanka is currently facing an economic and political crisis. The Rajapakse government is in big trouble. The Parliament session will begin in Colombo on Tuesday. A coalition of opposition parties is preparing to bring a no-confidence motion against the Rajapaksa government.
The decision was given by the cabinet in April
Earlier, an MP of the ruling party had told ANI that the oath of the new cabinet is to be taken today. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and PM (Mahinda Rajapaksa) will remain. The entire Sri Lankan cabinet resigned in the first week of April due to massive anti-government protests. An opposition party in Sri Lanka has opposed the president’s decision to appoint a new cabinet with inexperienced ministers. The President is under pressure from the protesters in the country. Therefore, a new cabinet has been formed before the Parliament session.
In the last Parliament session, the ruling party MPs had said, the President is not going to resign from his post before completing his term. Sri Lanka is facing a shortage of foreign exchange. This has affected its ability to import food and fuel. The shortage of essential commodities forced Sri Lanka to seek aid from friendly countries.
The opposition is demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. On the other hand, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in a special address to the nation had requested people to be patient and stop taking to the streets.
