The crisis of contaminated water in Bhagirathpura, Indore, shows no signs of abating, and the death toll is rising, creating an atmosphere of panic among the residents. While the government report submitted to the High Court acknowledges only four deaths, the reality on the ground is quite different. By Tuesday, 18 deaths had been reported, but after the deaths of Ramkali and Shravan on Wednesday, the number had reached 20. Instead of sticking to old procedures, the administration is now conducting cross-verification, and anyone whose name comes to light is immediately being added to the compensation list.
CM Mohan Yadav Promises Relief, Rejects Figure Manipulation
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has shown sensitivity to the situation, making it clear that the government will not engage in manipulating figures. He stated that, beyond the technical rules of the administration, the loss of every single life is painful for the government, and all victims will be provided with relief at all costs. CM Mohan Yadav says that while the administration has its own procedures, the government stands with the people, and anyone who has registered or whose information is available will receive assistance.
Pipeline Leakage Worsens Situation, Floods Shops
Collector Shivam Verma and Municipal Commissioner Kshitij Singhal are continuously visiting the affected areas. When testing of the Narmada pipeline began to control the situation, a new problem arose. Water leaked from the area where the drainage line had been repaired, flooding the colony and shops, after which the supply had to be stopped immediately. Municipal teams are now going door-to-door, advising people to keep their taps closed and to drink only boiled water from tankers.
Rs. 2 Lakh Aid Distributed, Prevention Measures Under Review
In this time of sorrow, the government has opened its coffers, and so far, checks for Rs. 2 lakh each have been given to 18 families. Chlorination of the water tank in Bhagirathpura is being re-examined to prevent such deadly negligence in the future. The administration’s shift from rigid procedures to immediate cross-verification and compensation reflects the gravity of the public health emergency unfolding in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area.
