New Delhi: As the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian organization Hamas rages on into its fifth day, India has initiated “Operation Ajay” (Operation ‘Ajay’) to facilitate the safe return of its citizens living in Israel. Foreign Minister Dr. S Jaishankar announced this crucial operation via a tweet, providing assurance of the government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens.
In his tweet, the External Affairs Minister stated, “Operation Ajay is being launched to facilitate the return of our citizens wishing to come back from Israel. Special charter flights and other arrangements are being made to ensure their safe return.”
Indian Citizens to Return via Special Flights
The Embassy of India in Israel promptly responded to the Foreign Minister’s announcement, revealing that Indian citizens who have registered their intention to return will be accommodated on special charter flights scheduled for departure on Thursday, October 12. Further communications will be sent out to other registered individuals regarding subsequent flights. It is estimated that more than 20,000 Indians currently reside in Israel.
Establishment of a Control Room
Prior to the initiation of Operation Ajay, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, announced on the X social media platform (formerly Twitter) that a control room would be established by the ministry. The primary objective of this control room is to closely monitor the evolving situation in Israel and provide information and assistance to Indian nationals who may find themselves in distress. The control room will operate round the clock, ensuring that help is readily available when needed. The Ministry of External Affairs has also provided a list of contact numbers for individuals to reach the control room in Delhi.
Human Toll of the Conflict
The ongoing conflict has seen Hamas extremists from Gaza launching attacks against Israel, eliciting retaliatory responses from the Israeli side. Tragically, more than 1,200 people have lost their lives as a result of these hostilities.
As India initiates Operation Ajay to bring its citizens home from Israel, it reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its nationals during times of crisis. The operation’s launch and the establishment of a dedicated control room underscore India’s dedication to assisting its citizens affected by the ongoing conflict in Israel.
