New Delhi: Indian Navy’s indigenously built destroyer Mormugao sea trials began in the Arabian Sea on Sunday. The first sea trial of this warship built under the P-15B project coincided with the 60th birth anniversary of Goa’s independence from Portugal. Mormugao is the second indigenously built stealth destroyer under the P15B class which is planned to be officially inducted in mid-2022.

The Indian Navy said in a statement, “December 19 was the most appropriate date to land this ship, as today the country celebrates 60 years of Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule.”

“The Indian Navy played an important role in the liberation of Goa. Dedication of the ship’s name to the seaside state of Goa will not only enhance the close bond between the Navy and the people of Goa but will also permanently link the identity of the ship to the vital role played by the Navy in nation-building. “
