New Delhi: As the mercury soars across many states, India is grappling with an intense heat wave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised an alarm, issuing a heat wave alert that is expected to scorch the eastern and southern peninsular regions until April 30. The forecast indicates a surge in temperatures, with the possibility of severe heat wave conditions along the Ganges in West Bengal, parts of Odisha, and the Sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal from April 30.
The IMD has also warned of heat wave conditions in isolated pockets across Bihar, Jharkhand, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh over the next four days. The coastal areas are not spared either, with similar conditions predicted for Konkan, Goa during April 28-29, and for Western Uttar Pradesh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam from April 28-30, 2024.
In Jharkhand, temperatures are expected to soar past 40 degrees Celsius in most regions, with above-normal temperatures forecasted for the Kolhan, Santhal, and North Chhotanagpur divisions until April 29. Meanwhile, the northern states are experiencing a contrasting weather pattern, with sporadic rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds predicted for Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on April 28.
Looking ahead at the next 24 hours, Skymet Weather predicts light to moderate rain and snowfall across the Western Himalayas. On April 28, heavier precipitation is expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and parts of Himachal Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh is also likely to witness light to moderate rain and snowfall. The Northeastern region of India may experience moderate rains along with lighter showers. Additionally, parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and South Odisha are set to face rain and strong winds. Northern Punjab is also on alert for light to moderate rain and thundershowers.
