New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster India’s electric vehicle (EV) culture, the government has extended the duration of the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS). Originally slated to conclude on July 31, this year, the scheme’s deadline has been pushed by two additional months, now ending on September 30, 2024. Let’s know the details:
Subsidies Galore for EV Enthusiasts
- Two-Wheelers: Under the updated EMPS, interested customers can still reap the benefits of subsidies on electric vehicles. Two-wheelers are eligible for subsidies of up to Rs 10,000.
- Small Three-Wheelers: Owners of small electric three-wheelers (including e-rickshaws and e-carts) can now receive up to Rs 25,000 in subsidies.
- Large Three-Wheelers: The scheme also extends support to large three-wheeler EVs, offering subsidies of up to Rs 50,000.
EMPS: A Green Mobility Revolution
- Ministry of Heavy Industries’ Vision: Launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries in March 2024, the EMPS aims to bolster the adoption of battery-powered vehicles across India. With a target of supporting over 5,60,789 EVs, the scheme is a crucial step toward sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.
- Initial Inclusions: Initially, the government included 3,33,387 electric two-wheelers in the scheme’s benefits. However, recognizing the growing demand, this number was increased to 5,00,080. Additionally, 60,709 electric three-wheelers (including e-rickshaws and e-carts) are part of the program.
- Budget Boost: To accelerate the transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to EVs, the government has upped the budget. Previously set at Rs 500 crore, the revised allocation now stands at Rs 778 crore.
