New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has today released the first list of its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are scheduled to be held in April-May 2024. The list contains the names of 195 candidates, who will contest from 16 states and union territories. The list includes 34 Union and State ministers, two former ministers, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, 28 women, and 47 youth leaders.
Highlights of the list
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek re-election for the third time from his parliamentary constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. He won the seat in 2014 and 2019 with huge margins of over 3 lakh and 4.7 lakh votes respectively.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is also the former BJP president, will contest from Gandhinagar in Gujarat. He won the seat in 2019 by a margin of over 5.5 lakh votes, succeeding veteran leader LK Advani.
- Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who joined the BJP in 2020 after quitting the Congress, will contest from Guna in Madhya Pradesh. He had represented the seat for four consecutive terms from 2002 to 2019, before losing to Congress’ KP Yadav by a margin of over 1.2 lakh votes.
- Union Minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Amethi in 2019 by a margin of over 55,000 votes, will contest from the same seat again. Amethi is considered a bastion of the Gandhi family, as it has been represented by them for most of the time since 1980.
- BJP has fielded Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of late External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, from the New Delhi seat. She will face Congress’ Ajay Maken, who won the seats in 2004 and 2009 but lost to BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi in 2014 and 2019.
- BJP has also given tickets to several other prominent leaders, such as Nitin Gadkari from Nagpur, Dharmendra Pradhan from Sambalpur, Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal West, Sarbananda Sonowal from Dibrugarh, Arjun Meghwal from Bikaner, Mahendranath Pandey from Chandauli, and Bhupendra Yadav from Alwar.

BJP confident of forming Modi government again
National General Secretary of BJP Vinod Tawde said that the party has worked to expand the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the last few days, by bringing in new allies and retaining the old ones. He expressed confidence that the Modi government will be formed once again in the country, as the people have seen its performance and achievements in the last seven years. He said that the same voice is coming from everyone’s heart once again Modi government.
Tawde also said that after polling in some Lok Sabha constituencies and states, some names were sent to the party high command, which were discussed by the Central Election Committee (CEC). The CEC, which is the highest decision-making body of the party, comprises of Prime Minister Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, Home Minister Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Organization General Secretary BL Santosh, Chief Ministers of various states, State Presidents, In-charge, Co-in-charge, and Election In-charge.
The BJP had held a meeting on February 29 given the elections, in which all the members of the CEC were present. The meeting lasted for over four hours, during which the candidates for the first list were finalized. The party is expected to announce the second list of candidates soon, as the nomination process for the first phase of polling will begin on March 4. The Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, and the results will be declared on May 23.
