Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai had earlier said in Parliament on December 1 that in the last 7 years till September 20, 6,08,162 Indians had given up citizenship. Out of this, 1,11,287 citizens have renounced their Indian citizenship till 20 September this year.

Between 2016 and 2020, more than 10 thousand people took citizenship of India
Rai had said that between 2016 and 2020, 10,645 foreign nationals had applied for citizenship in India. Most of these included 7782 civilians from Pakistan and 795 from Afghanistan. At the same time, about 1 crore Indian citizens are living abroad.

This data related to Indian citizenship has come at a time when the Union Home Ministry has announced that no decision has yet been taken regarding the nationwide National Register of Citizens. However, the central government has said that all those people who come under the purview of the Citizenship Amendment Act can apply for Indian citizenship.
