Washington: US President Joe Biden has clearly said that if China tries to attack Taiwan, the US military will take the lead to protect it. China claims its authority over this self-governing island. In an interview during the ’60 Minutes’ program aired on the news channel ‘CBS News’, Biden was asked on Sunday “if China attacks Taiwan, will the US military, American men and women defend it.” Biden said ‘yes’ to me.
CBS News reported that after the interview, the White House said that there was no change in US policy. Under this policy, America believes that the issue of Taiwan should be resolved peacefully. But the policy does not make it clear whether US forces can be sent in the event of a Chinese attack. Biden’s statement comes at a time when the government of Chinese President Xi Jinping has tried to threaten Taiwan by firing missiles into the sea and flying fighter planes in the nearby areas.
While many political figures, including US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have traveled there to support Taiwan. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry on Monday thanked US President Joe Biden for reaffirming the US government’s concrete promise of security to Taiwan. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry statement said that Taiwan will oppose authoritarian expansion and aggression with Washington and other governments with a common vision to protect regional stability and deepen the close security partnership.
