The Indian Air Force (IAF) is mourning the loss of two officers, Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar, who were killed when their Sukhoi-30MKI multi-role fighter jet went down in the Karbi Anglong area of Assam. The aircraft was performing a routine training sortie and had departed from the Jorhat airbase shortly before disappearing from radar screens.
Search and Recovery Challenges
Immediately following the loss of contact, the IAF initiated a massive search and rescue operation. The mission faced significant hurdles due to the geography of the crash site, which is characterized by thick tropical forests and steep hills. Local administration and various security agencies collaborated with Air Force teams to navigate the difficult terrain. Despite these efforts, it was eventually confirmed that both pilots were unable to eject and lost their lives in the impact.
Technical Scrutiny of the Sukhoi-30MKI Fleet
The Sukhoi-30MKI serves as the backbone of India’s air superiority, yet this incident has renewed focus on the fleet’s safety record. While the aircraft is a sophisticated, twin-engine platform, it has been involved in several high-profile accidents in the region over the last decade.
In August 2019, another Sukhoi-30MKI crashed into a paddy field near Tezpur, though in that instance, both pilots ejected safely and were recovered without major injury. Similarly, in May 2015, an aircraft went down approximately 36 kilometers south of the Tezpur Air Force Base shortly after takeoff, with both crew members surviving.
Next Steps in the Probe
The Ministry of Defence has emphasized that a thorough investigation is underway. The Court of Inquiry will focus on analyzing flight data and any recovered wreckage to establish whether the crash resulted from a bird strike, mechanical malfunction, or spatial disorientation, given the challenging weather conditions often found in Northeast India.
