Warsaw: The Prime Minister of Poland on Tuesday defended the tightening of abortion laws in the country and condemned the nationwide demonstrations by women’s rights organizations. That it should not be among the restrictions imposed because of the Corona Virus.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was responding to protests across the country over the past five days after the country’s apex court ruled on an abortion law last Thursday.
The court had said that abortion is unconstitutional due to congenital defects of the fetus. On Monday, protesters, led by women’s rights activists, disrupted traffic in most cities and even gathered outside the church, chanting slogans in abusive language to top members of Poland’s influential Catholic Church.
Top church officials condemn abortion. The protesters said that women should have a choice in the decision. Defending the court’s ruling, Moraviki, the head of the conservative government, said, “You have to be alive first to have freedom of choice.”
