Geneva: The United Nations’ Human Rights Chief said on Friday that the human rights situation in the Xinjiang region of China (China) needs to be reviewed “independently and comprehensively”. He also underlined that activists, lawyers, and human rights defenders in China are being held captive by running false cases. UN Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Bachelet said that his office was working on “mutually agreed points” for the visit to Xinjiang.

The Bachelet’s visit to Xinjiang was already being planned before he took over as human rights commissioner in September 2018. Bachelet discussed the subject of China while giving his regular details to the United Nations Human Rights Council on the state of human rights around the world. He praised China for preventing Covid-19 but also said that “fundamental rights and civil liberties are being violated in the name of national security and Covid-19”.

He said that more than six hundred people were being investigated for participating in the protests in Hong Kong. The global community has been in a rage for months with the Muslim Uygar community and other people being held in detention centers in Xinjiang, China, but the Bachelet’s office and Chinese officials have not agreed to a visit to the Bachelet.
